Last cruise of the year was a good one. Nice calm warm day as we returned to Florida and one of our favorite spots in Jacksonville. We will stay here for the month of December and swing around to Ft Myers after the New Year.

Had one of our more entertaining days in a while. The day started with watching a dolphin jump clear of the water four times while doing midair flips. Then when we approached King's Bay Sub Base, a sub was coming in to port so the Coast Guard forced us to turn around, go north, and get well out of the way of the sub. Then we went to Cumberland Island to explore the Dungeness Ruins. Saw a couple dozen horses, half dozen armadillos, a flock of turkeys, a hog and five piglets, and a raccoon.

Brunswick ‐ Oct 31, 2019

We had a Bald Eagle come land and watch the sunset last night. Then this morning, dolphins were swimming around the boat during the sunrise. Then we saw an additional 4 Bald Eagles as we cruised to Brunswick, Georgia. When we entered the St Simons Sound we saw a large vessel laying on its side, a car carrier named Golden Ray. Salvage operations have been going on for several months now. We worked around all the work vessels and made way to Brunswick Landing Marina.

Good day on the water. The rain held off and the sun came out. Managed another 60 miles to assure our arrival in Brunswick tomorrow. Only saw two boats today headed south on the water. However, we did see the marinas were all full of boats as we passed them by. On the other hand, we saw many dolphins at play today.

Had a good night on our all rope rode anchor. Hauling the anchor up by hand was a different story though. We managed and headed to Hilton Head Island. A large storm blew in and rain was forecast for the remains daylight hours, so we scratched Hilton Head and continued on in the rain. We crossed the Savannah River and crossed into Georgia. We brought the day to an end by anchoring in the Herb River in a lite drizzle. Once the anchor was set the rain came down. Good timing.

The wind was calm today, so a much more pleasant day than yesterday. We passed thru Charleston Harbor and then made way further south. After winding around in the salt grass all day, we arrived just north of Beaufort, SC. The first place we tried to anchor turned not to be that good so we moved a few more miles down the ICW. We finally found Pleasant Point and dropped the anchor an hour before sunset. This was our backup anchor and first time to use. Set right a way and holding fine.

Weighed anchor at first light and made way towards Charleston. The winds had shifted from the south so we had a stiff breeze on the nose most of the day. Managed to miss all the predicted rain, but then our good fortune turned on a dime. While deploying the anchor, the chain decided it was done playing and a link busted. That dropped about 125 feet of chain and one anchor into Neptune's war chest. Called the nearest marina and they managed to find a spot for us for the night.

Left Southport at around 0800 with destination of Osprey Marina in mind. We did stop and get fuel then traveled a few more miles and dropped the hook for the night. The marina was full so we used plan B. Looks like rain after midnight and most of tomorrow. We will see if we can make much headway or pull up short tomorrow. Bridges were the order of the day though. Had to get two opened to pass thru, but we had minimal delay. We also traversed the Rock Pile today, that is always fun.

Had a good day cruising south on the AICW. We weighed anchor and got an early start with the sun rise. We had good favor with the current as we seemed to be getting a good push for most of the day. We did see two people not having a good day on the water through. Both sailboats who had ventured out of the channel and run hard aground. They were waiting on the tide to rise and float them off. After running Snows Cut, we entered the Cape Fear River and stopped at Southport for the night.

Had to take care of some birthday mailings today so we got a late start. Still made it to the anchorage we were targeting. Currently 12 boats in here with us. Along the way today we did see a few PODs of dolphins and Claudia watched several dolphins swim in the bow wake, always exciting. After getting thru the Onslow Beach Bridge, we began to see the Tilt Rotor Aircraft doing takeoff and landing drills. Those Marines have trouble telling time and practice well into the night.

We did a POD Cast this morning to cheerlead the Down East Loop with the AGLCA. After the recording session, we weighed anchor and started south. The wind direction and speed made for small waves and following seas. We made our initial stop spot with two hours of daylight left so we found a slip in Beaufort Town Creek Marina and kept cruising. Once docked we got to witness a beautiful sunset.

Had a perfect conditions to cross the Albemarle Sound this morning in flat calm seas. We then went thru the Alligator River Swing Bridge and continued south down the Alligator River. We then went thru the Alligator River-Pungo River Canal. Then made way to Belhaven where we dropped the anchor for the night. We still found ourselves surrounded by boats today working their way south. The go fast boats were able to get away today, so it looks like folks are getting separated which is good.

Today was a zoo with all the snowbirds. It took us three hours to make three miles due to the congestion at the Great Bridge Bridge and Lock. Had to wait in line for three openings before we got in the Lock. Boats all around and some people were never taught how to wait in a line. After we made it thru the Lock, things calmed down as the pack of 16 boats we locked thru with spread out due to traveling at different speeds. The Coinjock Marina was full so we anchored just south of the marina.

Made a short run today thru Norfolk. Saw a couple of submarines at Navy Base. Also saw a pod of dolphins feeding. Arrived at Red 36, which marks mile zero on the Atlantic ICW. Then made way to Top Rack to take on fuel. A bridge has broken south of us at the Alligator River so we will re-group and determine our best path south. With winds picking up mid week, we may have to stay at Top Rack, and rent a car to attend AGLCA Fall Rendezvous. Time will tell.

Great day to cross the Chesapeake Bay and go to Hampton. The winds were light and the swells were one foot 10-12 seconds apart. We did cross thru an anchorage with six large o envelopes going vessels. Looked like they arrived overnight and are waiting for a pilot to take them into port. We docked at Hampton Municipal Pier where we will stay several days and do some sight seeing. The Air and Space Museum and perhaps the Museum of the Bible.

Weighed anchor and headed out of the creek about 0900. The run to Cape Charles was about 4 hours and check-in is after 1300. Nice breeze to keep the 80 degree temps at bay. Calm seas at about a foot made for a good cruise. We made way down the eastern shore and arrived at Cape Charles Town Marina about 1300. About the time we entered the Harbor, we got a text from Miss My Money that they might drop by in an hour or so. Gotta wrap this up and get ready for guests.

Had a decent cruise south with the exception of the wind shift that started just after leaving the marina. Were supposed to have north winds and following seas. Ended up with east wind and waves on the port beam which made for a roley ride. After getting closer to the eastern shore, the waves dropped and we had a good day on the water. Went up Occohannock Creek to find a place to anchor for the night. First time here and we are surrounded by good scenery. On to Cape Charles in the morning.

Weighed anchor and headed over to the Eastern Shore in search of Smith Island Cake. The cake was once actually made on Smith Island, but now is made in a bakery in Crisfield. The cake is usually 8 thin layers with icing between each layer. Back in the day wives made these thin cakes for the men going out for days at a time while fishing, crabbing, or oystering. Supposedly the thin layers help prevent the cake from going stale. We got cake and cake bites. Now where is that ice cream I made.

Beautiful day for a cruise, light winds and flat calm seas. We made a 36 mile run south down the Chesapeake Bay and dropped anchor at the Solomon's. Not much to report other than a Bald Eagle sighting. As I write this thou, sounds like we are in the flight path of an Air Force Landing strip. Oh well, they will be done by dark. We will cross the Bay to the Eastern Shore tomorrow and search for Smith Island Cake, the Maryland State Dessert.

Herrington Harbor North ‐ Sep 22, 2019

After a good Sunday breakfast at the Jetty, we headed out to cross the Chesapeake Bay to Herring Bay. On the way across, we listened to two POD Casts. One from the church of Eleven22 from Jacksonville, Florida. The other from 12Stone Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia. By the time the POD Casts were complete, we cruised into the marina and got settled. We will hang here for a few days and then move on Tuesday.

Left Georgetown Yacht Basin and made way to Kent Narrows. The big surprise was a long line of at least 30 cigar boats speeding south down the Bay. They were all in a line making a big scene. Later, we heard there was a motor vessel race going on in Baltimore. Suspect these were the racers. Beautiful day as we continued south with many boats out enjoying the day. We arrived at Kent Narrows and then made way to our favorite restaurant, The Jetty. Luckily our slip was open so we took it.

Georgetown Yacht Basin ‐ Sep 19, 2019

Short cruise today up the Sassafras River to Georgetown Yacht Basin. We like this stop because they have a courtesy car and there is no sales tax in Delaware. Which makes this a great place to re-provision the ship's stores. Most exciting thing on the cruise today were two Bald Eagles that flew across the bow of the boat. We also saw one Bald Eagle last night after we anchored. Always neat to see these majestic birds in the wild. We will sit here tomorrow and head further south on Saturday.

Hurricane Humberto is causing windy conditions all along the east coast. The winds in lower Delaware Bay are expected to be 15-20 mph today, but we are going to make a run for it up the Bay. The conditions were very lumpy the first two hours and then things settled down the further north we got. Decided to go ahead and go thru the C&D Canal today. So we stopped at the Chesapeake Inn for a late lunch or early supper. Then made 20 more miles to drop anchor in the Cabin John Creek.

Cape May ‐ Sep 16, 2019

With another large storm making its way up the east coast, the window of travel Days was closing fast. Consequently, we went from NYC all the way to Cape May today. The proverbial calm before the storm, with fair winds and only 1-2 foot swells on the ocean. We left NYC at 0730 and arrived at the marina in Cape May about 1100. We did take some time to watch a whale near Barnegat Inlet, then a pod of dolphins as we ventured south.

Dropped our mooring ball and headed to NYC. The winds were calmer than expected and we had a wonderful cruise into the Big Apple. Winds overnight blew out the haze and the skies were clear over the big buildings. We took the Harlem River to the East River, then rounded Battery Point. We then crossed the Hudson River to Lady Liberty and crossed our wake, bringing an end to our Down East Circle Loop adventure. The trip was way better than expected and certainly would do it again someday.

Weighed anchor and headed out of Port Jefferson. Before we were past the last channel markers, a horn sounded behind us. A ferry was leaving and we were blocking the exit. We moved over to port and he went on by. We turned to port after exiting the channel and made way to Port Jefferson. We will sit here on a mooring ball for two nights and then move on to New York City on Friday.

Dropped our mooring ball in New London and headed across the Long Island Sound. Had a good run with low wind and following seas. Was surprised that we did not see more boaters out moving around today, so the 60 mile run was a bit boring. But boring is good. After getting to our anchor spot, the windlass would not work. After some trouble shooting and wiggling of wires, the windless decided to power on. Looks like we will sit here tonight and move to Port Washington tomorrow.

We went over to a neighboring marina and took on fuel before casting off today. The fuel price was to good to pass up at $2.49 a gallon. Once the fuel tanks were full we headed to Groton where we took a mooring ball for the night. Even the Canadian Geese have decided it is time to head south. Saw many of them flying in formation today. A large flock landed in the waters beside us as we were attaching to the mooring ball. We also saw a whale today.

With Hurricane Dorian headed north, and the sea conditions worsening, we decided to head further north and wait for the storm to pass. Oddly enough, the locals do not seem to be bothered by the storm. Looks like business as usual and no talk of the high winds headed here on Saturday night. Never the less, we have a good dock, in a protected cove, and have tied up solid for the winds to come. Anticipate only 20 mph winds here with gusts to 35. We will see what happens.

Dropped the mooring ball and cruised to Newport. The wind was low so not much in the way of waves but the sea swells were 2-3 feet. The larger swells rocked the boat but we managed all right. Once we got to Newport we called for a mooring ball. They are first come first serve here. Managed to get a ball for one night. Will find out tomorrow if we can stay a second night. The Newport Boat show starts next week and they are busy building docks for the show and bringing in boats.

Weighed anchor and headed to the Cap Cod Canal. On the way we passed by Plymouth so gave a shout out to all the relatives still there from the Mayflower. After getting to the Canal, we rode the current to the west end and took one of the Mass Maritime Academy mooring balls for the night. The balls do not have any line so attaching to the ball was a bit tricky, but the third try was a charm. Checked the weather and it looks good for tomorrow, but Hurricane Dorian May be messing with our plans.

We weighed anchor and headed to Gloucester. We took the Canal north to south and what a ride it was. The current was running strong thru moored and anchored boats. A railroad bridge with a blind turn and then a crazy lift bridge. But once in the harbor we learned they were having a schooner sailing rendezvous so there were no places to stay, so we headed another 20 miles to Boston. We found a place to anchor for the evening.

Isle of Shoals ‐ Aug 31, 2019

We ran the three nautical mile line for most of the day. When we arrived at the Isle of Shoals expecting to find a free mooring ball, we were surprised to find the mooring field full of boats. In fact many of the mooring balls had three and four boats rafted up together. We decided to go around the outside and drop anchor. We did see two pods of porpoises and a seal today. Then a beautiful sunset.

With only a few miles to go and marina check in time at noon, we dropped the mooring ball at 1000 and headed to Portland. We then diverted over to take a look at the Portland Lighthouse before going to the marina. Got docked and went looking for a Five Guys Burgers and Fries.

Waited for the current to turn before dropping the mooring ball and leaving at noon. Had a great run the river and saw several lighthouses. Once we got back to the Ocean we headed west to Cliff Island. On the way we cruised by Admiral Perry’s home. Then took a mooring ball at Cliff Island.

Weighed anchor and went to Burnt Island for a picnic lunch. Took a mooring ball and dinghied to shore. Spent a little over an hour on the Island before going back to the mother ship. Then we took the back way to Bath. Upon arrival we took a mooring ball off the shore from the Maine Maritime Museum.

Left Rockland and had an enjoyable cruise over to Booth Bay. On the way saw a seal and another sunfish basking in the sun. Were able to drop anchor and enjoy a beautiful day on the bay for the afternoon.

We were only 15 miles from the Journey's End Marina, with a check in time of 1300. Consequently, we took a leisurely morning on the anchor and did not leave until 1100. The first half the trip was fine as we weaved thru the islands. However, when we popped out into open water headed due west, the north wind made for a roll ride. Thank goodness it was only 45 minutes until were at the dock. We will sit here thru the weekend and take off on Monday.

After three great days on Mount Desert Island, it was time to start south before the cool air sets in. Oh wait, it all ready has, high today was high 60's. We had to take on fuel today, so went to Grand Marina at Southwest Harbor to purchase fuel. After filling up the tanks, we had a nice cruise to Kent Cove where we dropped anchor for the night.

Rode bikes from the Visitor Center back to Jordan's Pond. Ride was about 12 miles. Celebrated by eating Pop Overs at the restaurant.

Trolley actually returned to Bar Harbor. We took the free bus back to the Visitor Center to bike ride the Carriage Roads back down to Jordon's Pond.

Took Otis Trolley on the Park Loop Road. First stop Cadillac Mountain. High point a long the NE Atlantic coastline. Great vista. Also first place in US to see the sunrise for much of the year.

After docking, took the free shuttle bus over to Bar Harbor. Walked around and enjoyed town. Took the free bus back to NE Harbor.
Northeast Harbor

Woke to a fog free day, blue skies, and sunshine. After a leisure morning, we weighed anchor and made way to Northeast Harbor. The marina sits on the edge of Arcadia National Park, and there is a free shuttle over to Bar Harbor. The lobster men were out in force today running their pots. On the dock at Northeast Harbor is a Wharf for the lobster men to sell their catch to a whole sale service. From the sea straight to the dock and a waiting truck. Very interesting to watch.

Mistake Island

Took on 100 liters of fuel in each tank before leaving today. Turned out to be a good decision. Left in heavy fog that hung with us the whole day. About halfway across the Gulf of Maine, the wind kicked up to 15-20 mph which made for some rough seas for about two hours. We set the throttles to 1,600 rpm and got up on plane to smooth out the ride. Then the wind dropped back down to 10 mph and life was good again. Anchored along with 3 other sailboats and started the Customs check in process.

Woke to fog again, imagine that. The fog stuck around for most of the morning but lifted after we rounded Cape Sable. We took a short cut thru the Tusket Islands which were amazing to look at, even had electricity. We rounded Sunday Point and made way up the Yarmouth Sound as the fog blew back in. Then just before docking, the fog cleared, which was a good thing. This happens to be the weekend for a music festival and a shark fishing contest. Weigh in is tomorrow. That should be fun.

Got an early start in the fog today. The fog did not lift until 1130. The good news was that there was very little wind and the swells were 3 feet with a 8 second period which made for a smooth ride. We arrived at our anchor spot around 1100. With the fog lifting and smooth seas, we decided to push on and get some miles under the keel on a good cruising day. We finally stopped at Cape Negro Island. We did see porpoises and seals during the day. Even a few sheep on shore at the anchor spot.

Got an early start out of Halifax to take advantage of the morning calm before the afternoon winds. Met a cruise ship coming into the Harbor as we left. At first, we thought it was a cloud. Then realized it was a large ship. Then clicked to that it was coming in out of the fog. Once we got out of the Harbor we ran in light fog until 0930. The swells were manageable today as we gently slide up and down the face of the waves. Dropped anchor at Lunenburg for the night.

We weighed anchor and left for Halifax at first light to avoid weather in the afternoon. In the Ocean we found 3-5 foot swells at 8-10 seconds apart. For the most part the swells were on the port aft quarter so it was not too bad of a ride as we drifted up and down the face of the swells. We arrived in Halifax around 1030 and started looking for a pumpout services. So we spent the next two hours motoring to the Dartmouth Yacht Club, pumping out, and docking at the Halifax Waterfront Marina.

Got an early start to make 70 miles today. The wind and swells are better in the morning and worse in the afternoon. Wanted to get some good miles in so that we make Halifax early on Thursday. Looks as though some heavy should arrive Thursday afternoon and we want to be safely tied to the dock before the weather arrives. Today the wind was less than 10 on the stern but the swells were 3-4 feet on the beam at about 10 seconds apart which made for a rolly day on the water.

Had planned to anchor in the Liscomb River tonight. However, when we were about 4 miles from the mouth of the River, Halifax Coast Guard said that a boat was broken down and asked any boats in the area to respond. We told the Coast Guard we would try to help. Upon arrival, we learned that Redtail had lost their transmission on a single engine boat. We tied on to them and pulled them 5 miles up the River to Liscomb Lodge. Ended up staying the night at the Lodge rafted to Redtail.

Plans got shifted when a 132 foot motor yacht landed on the fuel dock and blocked us from fueling and pumping out. Dockmaster arranged for a delivery truck to bring fuel to the lock at 1030. After fueling we left the lock and headed out to Dover Island. Tried to anchor in three places to no avail. Finally went another five miles and anchored in Raspberry Cove.

Weighed anchor this morning and made way back south across the inland sea. The water was so clear that you could see the anchor on the bottom in 15 feet of water. With light winds it was a smooth sail. Back to St Peter's. A Nordhoven was coming off the dock as we arrived, and we just took his spot on the 2nd T-Head. We will do a few boat chores and reprovision, then head out towards Halifax on Monday.

Took the Donelda's Puffin Boat Tour. Boarded their modified lobster fishing boat at 1300. We then enjoyed a 40 minute cruise out to Bird Island. It did not take long to start spotting birds. Probably saw at least 75 Bald Eagles. Saw numerous Puffins floating in the water. We also saw hundreds of grey seals sunning on the rocks at low tide. A wonderful 3 hour round trip

Left Little Harbor in the morning and made a short run to Baddeck. The marinas are booked so we will anchor out a few days before moving on. After arrival, we took the dinghy to shore, then walked to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. He had a summer home here and worked on airplanes and hydrofoils while here. Loved the museum.

We left the marina just before noon and headed out to explore the Lake. Our first stop this week was at Little Harbor, a well protected Cove. However, there was a bit of excitement on the cruise. After getting out in the lake we began to hear thunder, though we were surrounded by blue skies. Then we began to see lightening in the distance. We were lucky, as we skirted the edge of the thunder storm. Only were in rain for ten minutes with little to no visibility. Then blue skies again.

Had another wonderful cruise day. The run took us thru two locks and we entered the Bras d'Or Lakes region. The lakes are actually connected to the ocean and make for a fragile sea water/ fresh water ecosystem. What we have seen so far has been just gorgeous.

Had a great day on the water today. Weather was perfect, winds were light, and the seas were calm. We also were able to spot many sea mammals today. Seals, harbour porpoises, and whales entertained us throughout the day. On a more somber note though, one of the other boats on the Down East Loop got sunk yesterday when a sudden wind blast shoved them into the rocks. Sober reminder that it is not all fun and games out here. The boat will be a total loss, but the crew is fine.

Left PEI and headed to Nova Scotia. Conditions were not as advertised. Was supposed to be wind under 10 mph, waves less than 1 foot. Actual conditions were winds 15-18 mph and 2-3 foot waves. At least the wind was pushing us and the waves were following off starboard quarter. Made it back across the Northumberland Strait and into the waters of Nova. Scotia.

The rain stopped just as we were getting ready to shove off the dock, and then held off for the rest of the cruise. Saw several porpoises 🐬 and harbor Seals as we cruised today. After crossing under a bridge, we altered course for Charlottetown. As we approached the inlet channel a Police Boat showed up and circled us. We were then given directions to stop, so we did. The Police Boat pulled along side, asked a bunch of questions, then checked our paperwork, and then wished us a good day.

We stuck around Bouctouche for their Farmers Market. Was one of the best we have seen. They had a wide range of goods, including: farm raised meat, fresh fish, lobster, home grown vegetables, and eggs. They also had arts and craft vendors as well as people cooking food for breakfast and lunch. Lastly, they had baked goods, cakes, and cookies. The crew shoved off around 10 and had a smooth crossing to Prince Edward Island. The crew has decided to rent a car and explore PEI for a few days.

Weighed anchor and headed out in good conditions that stayed with us all day. Most of the cruise was in open water far from land so the view did not change much. We did cross paths with a few lobster fisherman out checking their pots. The best news of the day though was the marina has a working pump out station to discharge the black water holding tanks. We have not seen a working pump out since Quebec, and the tanks are full. After docking we walked around town to take in the sights.

AGLCA Director contacted me to see if I would do a POD cast about a side trip we did back in 2016 on the Agawa Canyon Train Tour. We set the taping for 8 Central and 9 Atlantic. The recording took about 30 minutes. There was a Tim Hortons near by so I scored some more donut holes before shoving off. It was a pleasant journey until the end. We could not find enough water in the channel so we circled around the other end of Island. Once anchor was down we spotted as many as 9 seals around us.

Started out under excellent conditions today. Saw many lighthouses along the rock bluffs. Also saw an iconic rock formation with a hole in the base forming an arch. Saw a few seals and two dolphins. Once we rounded the Gaspé Peninsula, the weather was holding so we decided to keep going and cross the Chandler Bay rather than stop. We eventually called it a day when we arrived at Shippagan. Looks like we may sit it out tomorrow to allow a front to blow through. However, Thursday looks good.

After a wonderful breakfast at the local restaurant, the only thing in the Villiage, we set out in the fog. The first ten miles were rocky but things smoothed out as we began altering course in a southerly direction. The following seas made for a comfortable ride. We debated about pushing on but ultimately decided to drop anchor at 1400 in the basin at Rivière au Renard. The weather looks promising for another run tomorrow.

Set out with very little wind but in mostly 2-3 foot swells off the port quarter. Passed two good looking lighthouses. We ran about 1.5 miles offshore and saw plenty of rugged shoreline scenery. We also spotted a Finback Whale when it surfaced about 100 yards off the bow. Put the engines in idle and waited 15 minutes but the Whale never came back to the surface. Put the engines back in forward and made way to the marina. No parley vous Anglais here so it took a while to get checked in.

Got an early start today to beat the afternoon winds. About halfway across the St Lawrence we ran into 3-4 foot confused seas, mostly hitting us on the port beam. Altered course for a direct line to the south shore and found 1-2 foot seas. Altered course again to run along south shore for a much nicer ride. We did see one pod of dolphins but not much else today. We sit in Ste Anne des Monts for two nites to allow the winds to fall back off. Should be a go for Saturday.

Had a wonderful cruise day. Weather was perfect with blue skies and a few cotton ball clouds in the air. We saw finback whale, a minke whale, and a couple of white sided dolphins as we cruised. Made way to Baie de Comeau where we took on fuel. Then traveled a few more miles to stop at a dock in the Baie de Pancrace. You could hear the flowing water of a water fall, so we walked to the falls over water on the red granite. Beautiful!

Used the tides again to find current on the way down the St Lawrence. We saw 5 pods of Beluga's before we reached the Lighthouse. Then only saw one Humpback Whale for the rest of the day. Stayed along the north shore to stay out of the north wind as much as possible. When we arrived at the anchorage we found 5 sailboats already there, one coming in just ahead of us, and another not too far behind. Must be a popular spot, or maybe the fact that there are not many anchor spots on the river.

Woke to rain and light fog this morning. Raised the anchor at 0800 after the rain stopped, and set the throttles at idle speed and just drifted with the outgoing tide back to Tadoussac. Amazing we averaged over 9 mph. Along the way we saw another Harbor Seal, but no whales. We will go visit the Whale Museum here and relax tomorrow.

Left in the fog this morning, our first fog day with many more in our future probably. We did manage to see two mor Beluga Whales as we left the marina. After that the view was nothing but fog till noon. About the time we entered the Marine Sanctuary the fog began to lift and we saw five more Beluga Whales. Then 20 miles up the Saguenay Fjord and not another whale. Pulled into a small marina for the night and will try to go to Baie of Eternity tomorrow and try to find a place to anchor.

To make Cape Eagle with favorable current, we needed to leave at 0420 in the morning. Sunrise was at 0454. Once we could see, we shoved off and headed east. Quebec looked great in the dawn light. We saw a large waterfall as we passed under a bridge. The mountains came all the way down to the shore line and we cruised in 100 foot water most of the day. Then within a mile of the marina we saw two Beluga Whales. What a great day.

After consulting the cruising guides and some local knowledge, it was determined that the best time to leave Three Rivers was 1130. So we started engines at 1100, unhooked from shore power and water, and cast off the lines. We made excellent time riding the current down to Quebec City. We have been told that the tide at Quebec City is around 20 feet, so they have installed a lock to enter the marina basin. This keeps the marina at a constant level. We exited the lock and took our slip at H1.

We passed thru the St Ours Lock, then completed about 12 more miles on the Richelieu River. When we arrived at the intersection with the St Lawrence River, we hooked a right hand turn and picked about a 2 knot current. When we arrived at the Lake of St Francis, the wind was blowing from the north up to 15 mph. This caused for 2-3 foot seas initially. As we approached the eastern edge of the Lake, the waves began to get smaller. Just a few more miles and we pulled into the 3 Rivers Marina.

We went and toured Fort Chambly before shoving off today. When we returned we had to wait until 1400 before we could enter Lock 3. These are step locks so you exit lock 3 into lock 2. Then step down and exit lock to into lock 1. Then step down again and enter Bay of Chambly. From there we travelled another 30 miles to stop at the St Ours lock for the night.

We had to wait for the 1330 opening to enter the Chambly Canal. We then navigated for ten miles and stopped at Lock 3. Rain started to fall as we entered Lock 9, so we made six locks in the rain. The good news is that the locks are small and only took 10-15 minutes to drain. We still look like drowned rats at the end of the ten miles and six locks. More good news is that tomorrow the locks open with full staff and on demand operating schedule. We will move on to St Oars tomorrow.

Had breakfast on the boat with the crew of Jill Kristy. After breakfast we headed to the Canadian Border and checked into Customs Office. Then it was north on the Richelieu River to the Chambly Canal. We took a spot on the wall for the night. The locks are only 110 feet long and 23 feet wide. There are 5 boats here and we are trying to figure out a way to get us all through tomorrow. There are only 2 schedule lock times tomorrow, 0930 and 1330. Right now we have a 1330 slot.

Had a good cruise to Rouses Point today. After leaving Burlington Boathouse we headed across the Lake to go check out Valcour Island. So we re-entered New York Waters. There was an interesting Lighthouse on the western shore of Valcour Island. Then we headed north up the western shore of the Lake and stopped just short of the Canadian border at Gaines Marina. Tomorrow we will enter Canada just about a mile north of the marina. Then check into Canada at the Border Patrol pier.

Awoke to rain storms that dropped wet stuff all night. By 0900, the rain stopped and the clouds began to clear so we set out towards Ft Edwards Yacht Basin. Had several low bridges to deal with because the rain has raised the pool levels between the locks. Had less than a foot of clearance on a few of these bridges. Good thing we left because the rain run off into the River was obvious and one of those bridges might become impassable till the pool reaches normal levels again.

We left the beautiful Bear Mountain and headed further up the Hudson River. This is a great cruise day as we run thru the hills. We also pass by West Point and Bannerman's Castle. As we approached the Poughkeepsie Bridges we headed towards the left descending bank and docked at the Shadows Marina. We were put inside on the face dock which will protect us from wakes on the river as well as flotsam. We will leave for shore excursion on Tuesday to OKC and hope Locks are open upon our return.

Storm cell blew in last night and caused anchor to drift. Spent 11:30 pm till a little after 01:00 am battling storm and resetting anchor. Another boat in anchorage also drug anchor. This morning, the other boat drug anchor three more times from 0600 to 0800. We followed his lead and left at 0900 when our anchor drug again due to wind gusts over 25 mph. We went 10 miles and stopped at Bear Mountain State Park where we will spend the weekend.

After a rocky rolly night by Ellis Island, we weighed anchor to time the current and surf up the Hudson River. The run up Manhattan was a delight. After the Island we entered the Dutch area of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. We could see Washington Irving's Sunnyside along the shore, as well as the Lyndhurst Mansion. Had to do an anchor repair before we could deploy the hook in Haverstraw Bay. Then we took the dinghy ashore for a strange experience. Glad to get back to the boat.

With a very good weather window today and deteriorating conditions thru the weekend, we decided to make a run for it to New York City. We left at first light (0530) and got out in the Atlantic Ocean to find near perfect conditions. We saw another shark circling around in the water but saw no signs of whales. By the time we arrived at Sandy Hook, the wind began to shift out of the south. We got some good pics around Lady Liberty and then dropped the anchor off Ellis Island for the night.

We headed out of the inlet at Cape May and found actual sea conditions better than predicted. We also saw several pods of dolphins as we entered the ocean. We hugged the coast as close as possible (<1mile) to minimize the wave action from the wind. On our way north we spotted a shark within 20 yards of the boat. We overtook a sailboat flying a French Flag, we had talked with the crew back in Cape May. We dropped anchor in Atlantic City with the hope of making New York City tomorrow.

Had another good run down the Delaware River and Delaware Bay to arrive in Cape May. Seas were flat with occasional wakes from the large commercial tows. Made a long run today to position ourselves for a calm ride down the Delaware Bay to Cape May on Saturday. Another beautiful day on the Bay with fair winds and following seas. The day got off to a good start by opening the Kent Narrows Bridge and transiting Kent Narrows back to the Bay. We crossed into Delaware on the C&D Canal with a large tow. Then dropped anchor off Reedy Island to stage for a early start to Cape May in the morning.

Weighed anchor and headed back out into the Bay in 11 mph wind and 1-2 foot waves. The forecast called for the winds to die off and shift out of the south so we rolled the dice and went for it. Finally the gamble paid off. the winds died as expected and the run was one of our best after 7 trips in the Big Bay. A great all around cruise in perfect conditions. We pulled into the Jetty Restaurant and celebrated our good fortune and the hand of God on our trip.

Since the Admiral found Smith Island Cake at Mallard's Restaurant in Onancock, we skipped stopping in Crisfield and made way to the Honga River where we dropped anchor for the night. But before shoving off, 5e skipper did make a donut run up the street to the Corner Bakery for a dozen donuts. I know this may be sac-religious, but this might just be better than Shipley Donuts. Interesting day on the water. We started out headed to Smith's Point. About noon, Claudia decided that we should cross the Bay to Crisfield. She got a tip that they make the famous Smith Island Cake, and she wanted to try some. We altered course and headed towards Tangiers Island. At 1400, the wind blew 20-25 mph as a storm passed by. We changed course again and pulled into safe harbor in Onancock to get out of the 4 foot waves. Claudia found cake at Mallards restaurant next to the Wharf.

Left Norfolk this morning just as the rain started. When we first entered the Chesapeake Bay, waves were only 1-2 foot. But when we rounded Cape Henry near the mouth of the York River the waves built to 2-3 feet with some 4 footers just for fun. After a couple of hours of rolling due to beam seas, we finally moved up into the East River and things smoothed out. Docked at Zimmerman's to repair an oil leak on our generator. Will be back underway once the repair is complete.

Only travelled a short 8 miles today. However, we were stalled for 45 minutes at the #7 RR Bridge which failed to open after a train passed over. So we had to wait for repairs to be made to open the bridge. We did meet back up with the Gammel Dansk and travelled the last few miles to Waterside together. After docking we went to a charity event where we helped build 20 bicycles. The kids then showed up and we got to give them the bikes. Great event, great day!

We passed on the 0900 Great Bridge opening. Good thing. There were 8 boats floating around waiting to make the opening. Then a tow showed up 5 minutes before the bridge opening and got head of the line privileges. The boats were struggling to get out of the way in the narrow channel with boats docked on both sides of the shore. Our 10 am opening went much smoother. We passed thru the bridge, then the lock, and took a slip 3 miles later at Top Rack Marina till Sunday morning.

Got an early start by weighing anchor at first light. Then headed into Albemarle Sound before wind would pick up. First third was relatively smooth. Next ten miles were rocky as wind and waves were coming from the west and hitting the beam. Finally we entered the North River and things smoothed out. We made way across Currituck Sound and then entered the Virginia Cut. We stopped at the Great Bridge Bridge, site of the first Colonial victory during the Revolutionary War.

Waited to leave this morning to allow the winds to die down more. We finally left at 1030 in the morning and headed towards the Alligator River. The winds were still strong but out of the NE so there was little wave action. Then it was 20 miles thru the Alligator River-Pungo River Canal. The narrow canal provided protection from the wind and allowed smooth sailing. When we exited the Canal, we found the winds were 15 mph. This made for 2-3 foot waves in the Alligator River. d north pounding the waves, the winds dropped and the waves settled down to 1-2 footers. After making the Alligator River Bridge, we found a spot to drop the anchor for the night. Early start tomorrow to cross the Albemarle Sound. Weather forecast predicts a smooth crossing tomorrow, let's hope the forecast is correct.

Windy, windy, windy long day thru some big water. After leaving in 12 mph winds with predictions for winds to drop to 10 mph, we had smooth sailing until we reached the Neuse River. The winds were out of the West which caused the waves to be on port quarter which caused us to roll a bit. After two hours of the rolling activity we reached a canal for an hour relief. Then it was back in open water across the Pamlico River and Pungo River. After 68 miles, we finally landed in Belhaven, N.C.

Weighed anchor at the first sight of light so we could make it thru Camp Lejeune before the War Games started at 0800. When the sun broke over the horizon, there was a bright red sky. Red sky in morning, sailor take warning. There was a low pressure area due tomorrow so must be the sign in the sky. I checked the weather apps and determined it would be best to find a marina for the next two nights rather than anchoring out again. Found a marina in Beaufort, so we made a reservation.

Had a good run today. Weather was perfect and we ran with the current most of the day. Had to negotiate two bridges today and managed to arrive at each with little or no wait time. We travelled in a group of five boats after we all congregated at the first bridge. We dropped anchor at Camp Lejeune, Mile Hammock Bay. They will close the ICW at 0800 for live firing exercises. We hope to get the anchor up and make the Onslow Beach Bridge at 0700 so we will be past the ICW closure by 0800.

Made our way to Southport today. Had to wait for the winds to die down. We had 40 mph winds for three days in North Myrtle Beach. Some friends in Charleston reported 70 mph winds at the marina they were staying. They also reported that two boats got struck by lightening, disabling one engine and all electronics. Guess I will not complain about needing to change out batteries tomorrow. We will be back underway on Wednesday. Did see several dolphins and one Bald Eagle today.

After a calm night on the hook, we weighed anchor and headed towards Barefoot Landing. After passing thru the Socastee Swing Bridge, we made way to Barefoot Marina. After landing at the marina, we took a dinghy ride across the water and walked to Fudrucker's for lunch. We will hang at the marina for a week and then continue north towards Norfolk.

Weighed anchor just before a down pour but did not get wet. FOG! Rain did not last long and we had a good cruise thru the Waccamaw River. Just north of Georgetown, a near submerged yacht struck something under the water and quickly sank. The boat is about 20 yards out of the channel. An attempted salvage operation failed on Monday, so we passed by cautiously. Not a good day on the water for that fellow. We stopped at Osprey Marina to get fuel, then anchored for the night at Enterprise Oxbow.

Large containers ships seemed to be everywhere as we left Charleston. We had to stop and let one ship go buy before crossing into the ICW. While waiting, got some good pics of Ft Sumner. We made way to McClellanville and arrived at high tide as planned. It was a good thing because high tide added 5.5 feet of water, and there were a few places where we would have run aground at low tide. The next excitement turned out to be a 2 hour long parade of bass boats waking us till we got anchored.

Woke to a fault light on the inverter, and no power being produced for the refrigerator. Started the generator and charged the batteries back up to 12.5 volts before starting the engines and weighing anchor. Then made the short jump to the Ripley Light Yacht Club where we docked in Slip A13. We are right next to the patio where the AGLCA event will be hosted tonight. We will spend the next three days making way to North Myrtle Beach.

Made the short jump to Stono River and anchored just south of Charleston. Has rained most of the morning as we swing on the hook. Looks like the weather will clear up a bit for this afternoon. Tomorrow we will make another short jump over to Charleston and a Looper Docktails hosted by our friends and AGLCA Sponsors, Curtis Stokes. We anchored here a year ago on June 4th with Satisfied Frog.

Woke to heavy fog. Waited till 0930 to move to the fuel dock to take on fuel. After fueling was complete at 1030, the fog had burned off so we headed out. We arrived at our first anchor spot early at 1330, but because the winds had picked up to 14 mph, we decided to keep going. Our second spot would be more protected from the south winds. However, getting there was rough because of the out going tide and south winds caused 1-3 foot waves. We were glad to be off the water at 1700.

Shoved off from Harbor Town in nice calm conditions. Had a good cruise up to Port Royal. Started raining a few miles south of the marina, but the rain stopped long enough to dock without rain. After docking the bottom fell out and it poured for an hour. We will sit here for the weekend and slowly make our way to Charleston, and target a Wednesday arrival to attend an AGLCA Docktails event.

Had a great run today. Weighed anchor early to ensure enough water to pass thru Hell Gate on a falling tide. Arrived at Hell Gate about 1030 and carried 13 feet of water as we passed thru the narrow shallow channel. Then it was another dozen miles to drop the anchor in Herb Creek on the south side of Savannah. On to Hilton Head tomorrow. Left Jekyll Island on a falling tide and had to deal with some extremely shallow water. One spot was less than 1 foot below the prop which always makes for a nervous time. After getting out of Jekyll Creek, it was a short distance over to Brunswick, where the crew got a rental car. Then it was time to do a little more exploring before taking Dave and Martha to the airport in JAX. We will probably stay here till Thursday due to high winds.

Wind finally died off and allowed us to cruise today. Had Dave and Martha onboard for the day. Had a good cruise to Jekyll Island. Took the courtesy golf cart around the island for a quick tour to visit the Beach Village and Historic District.

Today we cruised 31.5 miles up the Atlantic ICW to Jacksonville. Just after passing under the Jacksonville Beach Bridge, we hooked a left and entered the channel to the Palm Cove Marina. We will sit here thru the weekend and wait for our quests, Dave and Martha to arrive. We did notice a burglar on a dock as we headed north. He looked as though he might be a prison escapee. Left at sunrise to time our arrival in St Augustine at slack current. In the past we have arrived with the current ripping thru the marina which made docking extremely difficult. The marina claims that if you arrive at high or low tide + or - one hour, you should have slack current. We will see. On the way to St Augustine we saw many pods of dolphins feeding. Might be the most dolphins we have ever seen in one cruise before. We arrived at St Augustine an hour and 10 minutes after high tide [...]
. The current was minimal and we had an easy dockage. Thirty minutes later, the current was rolling about 2 mph. We took a tour of town and found a second shelf for our princess stove at the Sailor's Exchange. The Admiral is happy.

Weighed anchor this morning and headed north to Palm Coast. The winds were out of the northeast which meant that the barrier islands were blocking the impact. However, out in the ocean, the Coast Guard issued a ‘small craft advisory’ due to winds over 20 knots and waves over seven feet. Glad we are in the ICW where it is fairly calm and smooth sailing. Left Titusville this morning on our way north to Daytona Beach. Got a dolphin escort leaving the marina. We saw 13 manatees as we transited Haulover Canal from the Indian River to Mosquito Lagoon. Was more idle speed than we remember which made for a long day. Finally arrived in Daytona Beach about 1600 and had the anchor down by 1630.
